Cortijo Los Aguilares: The perfect fusion of elegance and terroir

30/07/2010

Bodega Cortijo Los Aguilares, located in the Malaga region of Serranía de Ronda (Andalusia) and endorsed by DO Sierras de Málaga, in its more than ten years of existence, has managed to define its own particular style of wines based on elegance and terroir. The quality of this grand bodega has achieved international recognition thanks to the unique geographic location of its vineyards, which benefit from an altitude of 900 metres and the characteristics of a Mediterranean climate, and also to the high standards of its vinification methods.

Cortijo Los Aguilares was founded eleven years ago by the Itarte family, originally from Gipuzkoa in the Basque Country, with the firm objective of making quality wines in Ronda. Endorsed by DO Sierras de Málaga, a region which brings together another twenty or so bodegas also committed to quality wine, bodega Cortijo Los Aguilares is located in the 800-hectare estate of the same name, of which 18 hectares are planted with vines in a place called, Puente de la Ventilla.

The location of the bodega, whose 18 hectares of vineyard are planted at an altitude of 900 metres above sea-level, surrounded by the sierras of Grazalema and Las Nieves, benefits from fluctuating day and night temperatures, which gives the grapes their Mediterranean (phenolic maturity) and Atlantic (acidity and freshness) character. At this estate the varieties grown are: Tempranillo, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Pinot Noir, which take full advantage of the region’s most typical soil type which consists primarily of clay, scattered with abundant boulders. A combination to which must be added the conscientious vineyard management techniques which follow the principles of Integrated Production; avoiding the use of herbicides and phytosanitary methods, and working in harmony with the environment.
