Seven countries, 21 culinary creations, unique oenological treasures, and one sole winner: the best food and Sherry pairing
Jerez de la Frontera, 18th of September 2013. - On the 15th of October the city of Jerez de la Frontera will play host to the most important international event dedicated to Sherry and gastronomy. Seven teams, made up of some of the finest chefs and sommeliers from different restaurants across the globe, together with renowned experts from the world of gastronomy, will gather at the Jerez de la Frontera Hospitality and Catering School for the eagerly-awaited International Final of the Copa Jerez.
Their objective: to produce the most harmonious food and wine pairing with a menu of two courses and a dessert which are individually combined with Sherry or Manzanilla.
The jury will comprise some of the most prominent names from the world of food and wine: Josep Roca, sommelier and co-owner of El Celler de Can Roca; Doug Frost, one of only three people in the world to have been awarded the status of Master Sommelier and Master of Wine; Jose Carlos Capel, the renowned food critic; Angel Leon, chef of the Aponiente and one of the most important figures in Andalusian cuisine; and Ronan Sayburn, the Master Sommelier who currently runs the prestigious Dorchester Collection UK chain, which owns the restaurants led by Alain Ducasse and Wolfgang Puck.
Seven countries in search of the perfect pairing
After two years competing in each of their respective countries, the finalists come to Spain ready to demonstrate their knowledge of Manzanilla and Sherry and their unique culinary talents. Germany’s representatives are Berlin’s First Floor restaurant (with one Michelin star) led by chef Karina Appeldorn and sommelier Maria Rehermann; Belgium’s team is formed by chef Jelle Cattelein and sommelier Hannes Desmedt, from the Hertog Jan restaurant, which is renowned for having the youngest team ever to be awarded three Michelin stars, something they have achieved in just five years; Denmark is represented by the Clou restaurant, with chef Jonathan Kjølhede Berntsen and sommelier Alexander Kjølhede Berntsen; Spain’s team is formed by Angel Luis Vellon, who will prepare the menu, and Ivan Torres, who is responsible for selecting the wines at Madrid’s Il Bambino restaurant; the United States is represented by chef Scott Jones and sommelier Melodie Reynolds, from the No. 9 Park restaurant in Boston; Holland’s team comes from the Inter Scaldes restaurant(with two Michelin stars) with chef Paul de Groote and sommelier Koen Van der Plas; whilst chef Kevin Tew and sommelier Andrea Briccarello from London’s Galvin La Chapelle restaurant will be representing Great Britain.
The world looks at Jerez
Following the success of the four previous editions, the Copa Jerez celebrates its 5th International Final, secure in the knowledge that it has become one of the most prestigious competitions on the international culinary calendar, and this year’s edition incorporates new features which will help to increase its international reputation even further. The organisers are preparing a complete programme of activities which involves all the bodegas in the denomination of origin and some 150 different brands of Sherry. Some of the region’s most illustrious names from the worlds of wine and gastronomy will be taking part and more than 500 professionals from the sector are expected to attend.
At the same time, experts and enthusiasts from all over the world can follow the event live online through the www.sherry.org website and share their impressions on the social networks. It is expected that some 50,000 people will watch the various activities via the different online platforms.
The International Copa Jerez Food and Wine Pairing Competition
The Copa Jerez is an international competition for the pairing of food with Sherry which is organised by the Regulatory Council of the “Jerez-Xérès-Sherry” and “Manzanilla Sanlúcar de Barrameda” Denominations of Origin and the Fedejerez bodegas federation. Created in 2004 with the aim of increasing awareness of the enormous gastronomic potential of Sherry, the event takes place every two years and the International Final brings together teams of chefs and sommeliers from various different countries around the world as they compete against each other to create the perfect combination.
