Toro DO's vineyards lie north-west of Rueda DO and are divided between southern Zamora - the majority - and Valladolid provinces. They are named after the district (comarca) and small, historic market-town of Toro, which sits on the River Duero in the north of the growing area. The vineyards lie at a range between 650-825 metres altitude and mainly run south from the Duero in rolling countryside. North of the river, the vineyards around Morales de Toro and Pedrosa del Rey were a later addition to the DO. Alluvial soils from the river and its tributaries, the Guarena, Talanda and Hornija, are predominant in their valleys or close by them. In the north they are limy. Away from the rivers the topsoil tends to be dry and sandy with a stony subsoil poor in organic material but well-drained.
