The Dehesa del Carrizal was established over 20 years ago by the local businessman Marcial Gómez Carrizal. In 2006 the property was awarded Pago status.
This project was a risky venture back in 1984 when the owner decided to put his money where his mouth was and plant Cabernet Sauvigon - a little known variety in the region back then - in a desert-like part of Castilla La Mancha near the Toledo Mountains.
The first few vintages of wines from the Dehesa del Carrizal were made off the property so that the owners could establish whether real potential of the vines but, after being recognised as on of Spain’s best 10 wines in 1994, Gómez Carrizal decided that it was time for the estate to have its own winery.
In 1997 the vineyard area was expanded to include other international varieties; Syrah, Merlot y Chardonnay and in 1998 the vineyard was completed with further plantings of Tempranillo. Currently the 22 hectares of vineyard are being expanded with another 5 hectares of Tempranillo.
The whole vineyard is cultivated “en espaldera” with underground drip irrigation systems to allow the vines to be watered during the driest days of the region’s long, hot summers.
On being awarded Pago status Dehesa del Carrizal demonstrated that its wines and its winery were produced to the highest possible quality standards including the suitability of the varietals planted for their terroir and the exceptional quality of the techniques used in the cultivation and production of the estates wines.
