Today the Penedès white wines are often made from a mix of local and French varieties. These wines tend to be light, fresh, clean and ripe, with plenty of fruit and flavour. Some, such as Chardonnays, are varietal and may be barrel-fermented. In the last few years the red wines have also established themselves in the same quality bracket, with characteristic blends of native and imported grape varieties such as Tempranillo, Garnacha and Cabernet Sauvignon. These are light, gentle, rounded wines. There is some sweet Malvasía and Moscatel made at Sitges. One bodega here still produces traditional oxidised (rancio) wines. A few bodegas make sparkling wines, which are distinct from the locally made Cavas.
