D.O. Jerez-Xérès-Sherry y Manzanilla-Sanlúcar de Barrameda

Introduction | History | Geography | Climate | Viticulture | Viniculture | Wines | Wineries

The Jerez DO producing area, where the vineyards are located, encompasses the towns of Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Trebujena, Rota, Chipiona, Puerto Real and Chiclana, in the province of Cádiz, as well as certain areas of Lebrija (Seville).

The soil, in gently rolling hills, is white limestone marl; its famous albarizas are spongy and deep, with excellent water retaining properties and unmatchable conditions for vine cultivation since they are able to reserve the rainwater for the dry, hot summer months.  Other types of land cultivated for the production of Jerez wines are known as the barros (clays) and the arenas (sands) and occupy a smaller proportion of the total growing area. The rolling hillside rises from 20-100 metres.

In addition, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry DO also encompasses what is known as the Crianza Area, surrounding the cities of Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda, where the Crianza y Expedición Wineries are located.  Only wines from the Crianza area may be considered Jerez DO wines. In Manzanilla-Sanlúcar de Barrameda DO, the Crianza area is limited to the town of Sanlúcar de Barrameda.
