The vineyards are situated in Lérida province, in inland southern Catalonia. They are broken down into six smaller subzones. Must of these run in an arc in the foothills of the mountains east of Lérida city, where they meet the vineyards of Conca de Barberá. However, there are other small subzones to the north and west of Lérida city.
Although the vineyards are geographically scattered, they generally share sandy topsoils over limestone, with low organic content. Altitudes vary from 250-700 metres.
The four original subzones planted in 1988, when the DO was formed, are Artesa, north-east of Lérida city; Valls de Ruicorb, east of Lérida; Garrigues, the province famed for its olive oil; and Raimat, a unique single-estate subzone. A decade later two additional subzones were added: Pallars Jussá, centred on the town of Tremp, 93 km north of Lérida, and Segrià, which runs west of Lérida and entirely surrounds Raimat.
