D.O. Chacolí de Vizcaya

Introduction | History | Geography | Climate | Viticulture | Viniculture | Wines | Wineries

Chacolí de Vizcaya - or Bizkaiko Txakolina, as it is called in Basque - is a province-wide DO in Vizcaya, the northwestern province of the Basque Country. The DO is younger than that of Guetaria, but potentially it is much larger and geographically more varied. The wines are enjoying a renaissance, and demand is so high locally that few leave the area . The DO was founded in 1994 and since then the area of vineyards, often grouped around the farmsteads (caseríos) in the countryside, has doubled. However, the vineyards themselves remain traditional, small-scale, scattered plots.
