Spain’s first region-wide DO was established in 1999 to allow bodegas in the existing Catalan DOs to blend wines with quality control and regulated status. Alongside this, as a catch-all denomination, Cataluña draws in nearly 4,000 hectares of scattered vineyards which were formerly unclassified within the DO system. These areas are not allowed to produce wines bottled under another DO name. However, bodegas registered with the DO may also produce unblended wines under the original geographically demarcated DOs of which they are also members.
