The wine sector in Spain attracts again all the attention of the specialized press, with an extensive article about the main wine areas of the country, published in the December issue of Wine Spectator. The article, by the specialized journalist Thomas Matthews, stresses the impressive development of the sector, despite the difficult harvests over the last four years. Among the 600 Spanish wines that he blind-tasted during the last year, Matthews says that 15% of them obtained more than 90 points, and five of them more than 95 points. And they all offer an unbeatable quality/price ratio.
Analysing every area, the wine critic stops in Priorat, cradle of “exciting and personal” red wines, where the work of Álvaro Palacios stands out. In Ribera del Duero, names such as Alejando Fernández, Peter Sisseck, Mariano García and Emilio Moro are notable. In Rioja, the best quality brands are leader wineries such as Sierra Cantabria, Viñedo de Páganos, Finca Allende and Bodegas Lan. These producers, according to the journalist, have set new international trends in the area, with wines which combine with great mastery fruit and structure with mineral tones and floral notes.
