The 16th edition of the International Wine Competition, which took place on 26th to 30th March within the scope of the Vinitaly 2008 fair held in Verona, awarded various prizes to Spanish wines. More than 3,600 wines from 32 countries took part in this event which is organised by Veronafiere.
The most outstanding prizes, from among those awarded, were the Special Award Vinitaly 2008 which went to Adegas Galegas under DO Rías Baixas, the Grand Gold Medal in the Still Wines with Appellation – Natural Sweet Wines category which went to Pedro Ximénez ‘Una Vida’ from Bodegas Moreno under DO Montilla-Moriles and the Gold Medal in the Still Wines with Appellation – Red Wines of the Last Three Vintages category (2007-2006-2005) which went to ‘Deyo 2005’ from Bodegas Castillo de Monjardín under DO Navarra.
Additionally, another 21 Spanish wines won a Special Recommendation in various categories: five wines under DO Rías Baixas (‘Don Pedro de Soutomaior 2007’, ‘Laxas 2007’, ‘Abadía de San Campio 2007’, ‘Tempo 2004’ and ‘Veigadares 2006’), two under DO Bierzo (‘Cuatro Pasos 2006’ and ’Martín Sarmiento 2005’), two under DO Jumilla (‘Cabernet Sauvignon Mayoral 2004’ and ‘Syrah Mayoral 2004’), two under DO Montilla-Moriles (‘Amontillado Viejo “Cabriola”’ and ‘PX Vino Dulce de Postre Selección 1927’), two under DO Cava (‘Viña Silvia Reserva de Familia’ and ‘Brut Reserva 2005 Heretat Mas Tinell’), two under Campo de Borja (‘Pago de Romeroso 2001’ and ‘Pago de Huechaseca 2005’), two under Penedés (‘Mas la Plana 2004’ and ‘Gisel 2006’), one under Rioja (‘Burgo Viejo Tinto 2004’), one under Ribeira Sacra (‘Abadía da Cova 2005’) and one under Rueda (‘Marqués de Irún Verdejo 2007’).
