Spanish organic wines have been very successful in the latest International Wine Awards, part of the World Organic Trade Fair BIOFACH, held in Nuremberg (Germany) 16th-19th February, winning 9 gold medals, 26 silver and 18 recommendations (bronze).
The gold medals, the highest distinction in the competition, fell to Osoti La Era (Osoti Viñedos Ecológicos, Rioja), Orbes y Parvus (Alta Alella, Alella), Viña Aljibón (Coop. Jesús del Perdón, La Mancha), Parra Celsius Crianza (zrimpa, La Mancha), Azul y Garanza Cabernet Sauvignon (Azul y Garanza, Navarra), Aroa Jauna - their Merlot-Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Sauvignon-Tempranillo (Bodegas Aroa, Navarra), Fondos (Albet i Noya, Penedès) and Costerse (Mas Igneus, Priorat).
In total 777 wines made from organic grapes competed (72% more than the previous year) from leading producer countries such as Spain, Italy, France, Argentina, Chile, Germany, Greece, Turkey and Hungary, among others. The wines were evaluated by a panel composed of 30 expert tasters, oenologists and winemakers from Germany, Italy and Switzerland. The prize categories were red wine, red wine with barrel contact, white wine, rosé and sparkling wine.
