Valdeorras: gateway to Galicia and its wines

The varieties endorsed to make white wines are: Godello, the preferential grape, Doña Blanca and Palomino. For reds, and currently stirring up a lot of interest, are: Mencía (preferential), Merenzao (also called María Ardoña), Alicante or Garnacha, Grao Negro, Tempranillo, Brancellao and Sousón.

In essence, the region boasts two single-varietal wines. The first and most emblematic is a Godello white, with its refined fruity aromas (apple, peach, grapefruit, banana), and yellow, golden or straw colour. It has a good structure and is intense and full in the mouth. It is also tasty and balanced, and has an average alcohol content of 12.5º. The most outstanding reds are made from Mencía, with an intense purple colour and an elegant fruity aroma (blackberry, redcurrant, cranberry), light and tasty, with a good alcohol-acidity balance, appetising and with a long and intense finish.

According to the latest figures provided by the Regulating Council, DO Valdeorras sold close to 3.5 million litres of wine during the last fiscal year. Foreign trade sales figures reached 121,160 litres, representing 3.46 percent of total sales. The leading export wines are the Godello single-varietal whites, representing 10 percent of exports. Sweden, Germany and the United Kingdom are among the main customers within the European Union, and from further a field, the US. Sales are experiencing an important increase in the US due to the high ratings awarded by some of the most prestigious wine critics.

To summarise; men and women in the region have been capable of bringing together hard work, age-old traditions, and modernity in order to uphold the origin and guarantee the quality of a selection of wines that have become the very essence of the terroir itself. So now, after years of investigation efforts and the gradual implementation of new technology to tend the vineyard and also in the production process, they have finally earned the recognition they deserve.
