DO Bullas is the youngest of the three winemaking appellations in the Murcia region, as well as being the smallest in size by vineyard extension. However, in recent years its growth in new wine brands and the creation of new bodegas denote this vitiviniculture region’s potential, whose hallmark is the Monastrell variety. Its wines have already received recognition in various international competitions, and it has also managed to export 30 percent of its endorsed wine abroad.
The town of Bullas, which gives its name to the appellation, has existed since Roman times and reached a certain level of importance during the Al-Andalus period. After the 13th century “reconquest”, the region prospered thanks to agriculture. Even then, wine was made to be marketed and sold.
Around the middle of the 20th century, Bullas began to make wine for the bulk wine market, and did so up until the end of the 1980s when the bodega started to invest in the technology required for making premium wines.
DO Bullas was founded in 1994, and today boasts a total of 14 registered bodegas which bring together 675 vine-growers and 2,300 hectares of vineyards with an average annual yield of 6.5 million kilos of grapes.
The production region for wines under DO Bullas covers the Murcia municipalities of Cehegín, Mula, Pliego, Ricote and Bullas itself, as well as a part of Calasparra, Caravaca, Moratalla, Lorca, Cieza and Totana.
