The region also grows international varieties that have adapted to local conditions, including whites Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Moscatel; and reds Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.
The climate is defined by average yearly temperatures of 15ºC, ranging between mean maximum and minimum readings of 35ºC and -2ºC respectively. Rainfall is fairly balanced, with average readings between 300 and 600 mm, mainly in the months of April and May and then September and October.
Two millennia of viticulture endorse DO Cataluña in its ongoing quest for ever-increasing quality. Production is limited to 12,000 kg per hectare for white varieties and 10,000 kg for reds. Alcohol must be provided naturally by the grape and these must arrive at the winery in perfect conditions.
The concern for quality continues in the winery, where musts are extracted by applying smooth pressure, then subjected to slow fermentation at monitored temperatures. Once ready for ageing, wines are allowed to rest in oak barrels in underground cellars or chilled warehouses over 6, 12 or 24 months.
DO Cataluña has successfully combined a deep-rooted cultural tradition with the strictest demands in terms of quality, the key to their current international success. In this sense, their main clients are Germany, the United Kingdom, the USA, Sweden, the Netherlands and Denmark.
