The area enjoys a continental climate, with a Mediterranean influence and annual average rainfall in the region of 300mm. Vineyards lie on rolling hills at an altitude ranging between 400 and 850 m above sea level.
DO Yecla’s production area spans around 7,200 hectares of registered vineyards, with reds covering 95 percent of that area. The leading variety, at 85 percent, is Monastrell, local to southeastern Spain and perfectly acclimatised to its environmental conditions. The remaining 10 percent is split between Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. White varieties, covering 5 percent of the appellation’s vineyards, are Airén, Macabeo, Chardonnay and Malvasía.
DO Yecla is divided into two sub-zones: ‘Yecla Campo Arriba’, planted overwhelmingly with Monastrell and giving alcohol contents of up to 14º; and ‘Yecla Campo Abajo’ where grapes have a lower alcohol content (up to 12º in reds and 11,5º in whites).
White wines produced at the Murcia appellation are straw yellow in colour, fruity and boast a magnificently intense bouquet. Rosés, which make up 15 percent of the appellation’s production, are refreshing and display a powerful fruit character, which combined with their balanced acidity, provide a pleasant intensity in the mouth. DO Yecla’s most common and representative wines, however, are its reds. Made essentially from Monastrell, they are a violet cherry colour with pomegranate overtones. The bouquet displays a range of fruits and in the mouth they are fleshy, warm, tannic and smooth, balanced and with a high extraction.
