This Murcia appellation’s winemaking tradition, upheld over the centuries by its devoted winemakers and growers, gives high-quality wines made from the Monastrell variety, increasingly popular abroad.
Designation of Origin Yecla is located in north eastern Murcia, in the Altiplano. The area covered matches the municipal demarcation of Yecla.
Yecla has been producing wine since Phoenician times, with plenty of archaeological findings to prove the relevance it reached during the Roman occupation. The remains of a wine cellar harking back to the 1st century were recently discovered at Fuente del Pinar, with traces revealing it was in use until the late 15th century.
The Moors found a great profusion of vineyards on their arrival, and by the 18th century, the region’s production had achieved the status of “Bodega Mayor”, according to the chronicles of King Phillip II of Spain. This tradition has survived over the centuries, laying down the foundations for a well-established winemaking industry.
The soil is poor, with a high proportion of limestone and permeable to a considerable depth, making it ideal for growing grapes for quality wine.
