DO Valencia: Half a century shaping history

Ever since DO Valencia was established, making quality wines has been a leading concern. However, the last few years have brought about an in depth transformation with an ambitious project that affects the entire cycle, from the planting of new vines and the introduction of new methods to the building of state of the art wineries and cooperatives fitted with the latest technologies, with the sole aim of entering the highest notches of the quality wine market, placing the wines in the position they deserve.

This is the ultimate target of the Quality Improvement Plan engaged in 1999, which provides financial support to all those wineries and cooperatives who increase their production of matured wines.

DO Valencia wines’ presence and acclaim on the international wine scene is now an established reality. Around 60 percent of their production is currently exported. The EU is their major export market, with Germany topping the league, followed by France and the UK. Switzerland, the Netherlands, Denmark and Finland are also important buyers. The Asian market and in particular Japan has also become a key destination for the appellation’s wines. The US, Canada and Australia are also increasing their orders.

The appellation’s latest sales figures point to 44 million bottles sold in 2006. Export trends, continue, accounting for 71 percent of the 567,000 hectolitres sold in 2006.
