DO Valencia: Half a century shaping history

The Valentino subzone covers the municipalities of Alborache, Alcublas, Andilla, Bugarra, Buñol, Casinos, Cheste, Chiva, Chulilla, Domeño, Estivella, Gestalgar, Godelleta, Higueruelas, Lliria, Losa del Obispo, Macastre, Montserrat, Montroi, Pedralba, Real de Montroi, Turís, Villamarchante and Villar del Arzobispo. It is Valencia’s largest area and provides the broadest range of wines, thanks to its varied soils and climates. It covers the central part of the Valencia province, including the counties of Chiva, Hoya de Buñol, parts of Camp del Turia and of Los Serranos. Vines are grown between 250 and 650 metres above sea level. Wines made are both light, fruity and aromatic whites between 10.5º and 12º in alcohol content, and smooth and rounded reds at 11º to 13º. Pedro Ximénez grapes are also used to make wines of its variety.

The Moscatel de Valencia subzone lies in the centre of Valencia, overlapping Valentino in the towns of Catadau, Cheste, Chiva, Godelleta, Llombai, Montroi, Montserrat, Real de Montroi and Turís. These are warm and sunny vineyards, under the influence of the sea breeze that provides the perfect conditions for growing the Roman Muscat variety, which provides musts that are naturally rich in sugar. Production methods are geared towards making a dessert wine with a minimum alcohol content of 15º and a highly characteristic bouquet that is smooth and fluid, like the variety it is made from. The grape is also used to make dry moscatel wines and renowned sparkling wines, as well as in boosting the muscat bouquet in other whites.

Finally, the subzone of Clariano lies to the south, covering the entire Vall d’Albaida county and some of the towns in La Costera. The land is hilly, with altitudes ranging from 400 to 600 metres. The area makes light, hay-coloured whites with a powerful bouquet and alcohol between 11º and 12º, as well as bold reds with a lingering bouquet, flavoursome in the mouth and an alcohol content between 12 and 13º.

Varieties covered by DO Valencia are Tempranillo, Monastrell, Bobal, Tintorera, Red Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Forcayat, Bonicaire, Syrah and Pinot Noir for reds; and Merseguera, Malvasía, Planta Nova, Macabeo, Tortosí, Planta Fina, Pedro Ximénez, Verdil and Chardonnay for whites.
