1957 saw the establishment of the Valencia Designation of Origin. In the 50 years since, quality has not ceased to improve in a region where winemaking is the main source of income for an important part of the population. The area boasts a range of highly diverse reds, whites and rosés.
Though many archaeological finds point to the existence of wine in Valencia before the Roman Age, it was they who established viticulture and the wine trade as important economic motors in the region. The great many amphorae from the period found near the city of Valencia reveal the intense trade that went on in some points of the coast. In fact, the Gulf of Valencia (Saguntum) was one of the hubs for exporting wine to other parts of the Empire and shipping it to the legion.
The establishment of the appellation Regulating Council was a gradual process that developed throughout the 20th century. The Levantine Viticulturists Federation was established in 1924, laying the foundations for the earliest forms of quality control and sales policies. Years later, in 1933, the Wine State Act made specific mention of Valencia as a winemaking region. The process came to fruition in 1957 with the establishment of the Valencia Designation of Origin and the adoption of new bylaws.
Today, DO Valencia boasts a winemaking potential of 18,060 hectares under vines and covers over 80 wineries, of which 46 bottle their own production. 85 percent of the sector is structured in cooperatives, with a total membership of 12,000 growers who achieve an average production of 650,000 hectolitres.
One cannot adequately explain DO Valencia without mentioning its four subzones: Alto Turia, Clariano, Moscatel de Valencia and Valentino. The first covers the towns of Alpuente, Aras de los Olmos, Calles, Chelva, La Yesa, Titaguas and Tuéjar. Geographically, it lies in the north westernmost tip of the province of Valencia. It is a mountainous area, with slopes bathed in sunlight throughout the entire day. Vineyards are planted at altitudes between 700 and 1,000 metres. It provides bright, fresh, fruity and powerfully scented white wines, with alcohol content between 10 and 11º.
