DO Mondéjar is one of the youngest appellations in Spain, having joined the ranks relatively recently, in 1997. Located in the south-west corner of the province of Guadalajara, in the municipality of Mondéjar. the vineyard extends along a rolling landscape of smooth slopes, home to preferential varieties: Cencibel, the regional name given to Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon for reds, and Malvar, Macabeo and Torrontés for whites.
Wine has been made in this region for centuries, thanks, to a great extent, to the city of Mondéjar’s strategic position on the route that unites Valencia and Madrid. The first references to vineyards in the Mondéjar region can be found in the ‘Relaciones Topográficas’ (Topological Survey) carried out in the 16th century during the reign of Philip II. However, it was not until the 20th century that grapes from the region were commercialised. Coinciding with the increase in vineyard surface area, these two events culminated with the creation of the appellation.
DO Mondéjar extends over 20 municipalities in the south-west region of the province of Guadalajara; it covers a total surface area of 93,962 hectares, of which 3,000 hectares are committed to vine crops. In broad terms, it represents a thoroughfare between the Alcarria and the Mesa de Ocaña plateaux, where it spans the perimeter of the River Tagus basin, which together with the River Tajuña, are the region’s two most important sources of water. Consequently, the region boasts tubular morphology, hemmed in, on the one side, by rivers, and on the other, by extensive slopes and plains.
