Costers del Segre has gradually increased the variety of wines it makes and currently it offers reds, whites, rosés, quality sparkling wines, pearl wines and traditional liqueurs.
The major part of the whites and the rosés are targeted for immediate consumption, although there are also red crianzas and some reservas, thanks to a great extent to the introduction of international varieties such as Pinot Noir or Syrah.
There are also different styles of production: one can come across very smooth and refined wines but also others that are characterised by their high alcohol content.
The harvests from the last decade have received the rating of Very Good, with the exception of the 2004/2005 campaign that was rated as Excellent, which gives some idea as to the quality of this wide range of wines.
All of this, in recent years, has helped this appellation’s wine production and exports to increase, registering 118,083 hectolitres of wine in the last harvest, when ten years ago, in the1997/1998 campaign, it made only 58,317 hectolitres of wine.
And as to the sales balance, of the total volume of wine sold by DO Costers del Segre, around 40 percent is targeted at international markets, its main customers being European Union countries, among which the Nordic countries and Germany stand out. This figure has experienced an important increase in the last five years, as in the 2003/2004 campaign 23 percent of total sales were exports.
Furthermore, this Catalonian appellation’s wines are acknowledged in various yearly international competitions. In 2007 alone, wines from five bodegas under the appellation won nine awards in different contests such as the International Wines & Spirit Competition in London, or the Challenge International du Vin in Bordeaux.
In spite of everything that has been said, DO Costers del Segre’s potential has yet to be fully explored. Without doubt this emerging appellation still has plenty of room for expansion.
