Costers del Segre, an appellation with room for expansion

This appellation is currently spread over a total of 4,719 hectares divided in 2,843 plots cultivated by 650 vinegrowers, and brings together nine bodegas and 22 bottling companies.

The region’s orography is relatively gentle, although it is more undulating in the south in the Catalonian Cordillera Prelitoral foothills. The altitude varies from 250 to 700 metres. The major part of the vineyard is planted on dark-chalky soil, with a high lime-level, scant clay and poor organic material.

As to the climate, the region stands out for its continental characteristics, influenced by the proximity of the mountains, but with very little rainfall. The average yearly precipitation is around 385 mm in Lleida and 450 mm in the rest of the region. Temperatures can fluctuate greatly during the same day, although the yearly average is 14 to 15ºC, however minimum temperatures fall below zero in winter and the summer maximums exceeds 35ºC.

As already mentioned, the grape varieties at Costers del Segre, include both native and foreign varieties, coming to a total of 21. Among the recommended white varieties are Macabeo, Xarel.lo, Parellada, Chardonnay, Garnacha Blanca, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, large grain Moscatel or Moscatel de Alejandría, Malvasía and Gewürztraminer; while the endorsed whites are Albariño and small grain Moscatel. The recommended red varieties are Garnacha Tinta, Tempranillo (called Ull de Llebre in this region), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Monastrell, Trepat, Samsó, Pinot Noir and Syrah.

The maximum production quota allowed by the Regulating Council per hectare is 120 hectolitres of wine, both in white and red varieties. As a result, the maximum planting density allowed is 4,500 vines per hectare and the minimum, 1,500 vines per hectare. Another technical fact to bear in mind is yield, which cannot exceed 75 litres of must or wine for every 100 kilograms of grapes.
