Costers del Segre, in its little more than two decades of history as an Appellation, has undergone multiple changes. Coming of age in the province of Lleida, its wines have gained in complexity, quality and consumer awareness, both at home and abroad. And all thanks to the efforts of both the smallholder vinegrowers and the great bodegas who have settled in the region.

The beginnings of DO Costers del Segre have their origins in 1983 when the then Instituto Catalán de la Viña y el Vino (Incavi)’s director, Jaume Siurana, and the director general of Codorniú and Bodega de Raimat, Manuel Raventós, thought that it was about time the excellent vitiviniculture quality and tradition of the Lleida province were safeguarded by a Regulating Council that could promote the region by taking advantage of the huge success of Raimat wines.

They were joined by well-known public figures from the wine world from the regions of Noguera, Urgell, Garrigues and Raimat, planting the seed that gave its fruit, by obtaining the distinction of Appellation for the region in 1988. At the beginning, Costers del Segre was made up of the four sub-regions mentioned above, later on, and after various modifications to the by-laws, the last in 2005, the appellation was left with a total of six sub-regions: Artesa de Segre, Urgell, Garrigues, Pallars Jussà, Raimat, Segrià and Valls del Riu Corb, that are located around the middle of the southern half of the province of Llerida, in an upside-down cone shape.

As well as the incorporation of the new sub-regions, there are also other changes that ought to be taken into account, such as the endorsement of the use of foreign grape varieties that have been added to the list of the originally endorsed native varieties. The wise combination of both, as well as the use of state-of-the-art technology and enterprising innovation, has produced wines with a marked personality, the mark of DO Costers del Segre.
