Álvaro Palacios: A idealist in the realms of Rioja, Priorato and Bierzo

Álvaro Palacios has demonstrated that not all sequels are bad, yet not content with this victory he put himself out on a limb once again, owing to the popular Spanish saying “all good things come in threes” and decided to become a prophet in his own land, La Rioja, at the family bodega in the town where he was born, Alfaro, where he makes: Palacios Remondo. Here, the oenologist is determined to recover what the French call ‘vin de village’, or village wines, which, in this case, are made from the vineyards he owns at the foot of Mount Yerga. This is where he makes, ‘Placet’, a single-varietal wine made from Viura, which clearly confirms that white wines can compete at the same level as reds, and ‘La Montesa’, a red crianza wine, a coupage of Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha.

Through his creations, Álvaro Palacios has conquered domestic and international consumers alike and even the most sophisticated palates from both home and abroad have taken off their hats to him and his wines. Examples of this recognition can be seen by the fact that he was distinguished by the ‘Grand Jury Europeén (GJE)’ with the ArtVinum award for most outstanding young winemaker 2008 and that he is a member of the Nobel Order of Wine Knights. Furthermore, over the last decade on the domestic front, he has been named repeatedly as best oenologist and viticulturist by various publications and public bodies.
