The three wines that are the result of this conscientious and meticulous work are: ‘Quincha Corral’, ‘Finca Terrerazo’ and ‘Mestizaje’. The first is described by its maker as a full-bodied wine with good structure, colour, and glycerines, while the second is a more elegant wine, less concentrated and expressive than ‘Quincha Corral’, made from older vines. “When I started, our idea was to make just one wine, but I realised that there were two very different wines”, Antonio Sarrión explained adding that he is, in both cases, a strong supporter of long fermentation and ripening as well as ageing in oak. However, “each vintage is aged in oak the time we believe to be just right, we are always on the lookout for a good coupage between fruit and wood”, he explained, estimating the ageing process somewhere between 17 and 20 months according to the year. “We tend to go for a little less ageing with ‘Finca Terrerazo’, although some years the ageing process is quite similar to that applied to ‘Quincha Corral’”.
The bodega makes between 8,000 and 10,000 bottles of the first wine, and around 35,000 to 40,000 bottles per year of ‘Finca Terrerazo’. Both wines are made from a minimum of 80 percent Bobal.
‘Mestizaje’ is a different kettle of fish, with 150,000 bottles a year; Sarrión regards this wine as “the gateway to Mustiguillo”. Made from 50 to 60 percent Bobal, with Tempranillo as the second most important variety contributing approximately 20 percent, depending on the year, while the rest comes from Syrah and Garnacha. The grapes used for this wine are grown through a combination of traditional viticulture, with unirrigated goblet-pruned vines, and modern viticulture, with monitored irrigation vines. “I also use stainless steel vats and age the wine in French oak barrels and wine-tanks. It’s an easier and more approachable wine in which, just like its sisters, the quality-price-pleasure ratio is excellent. I include pleasure in this equation because for me it’s essential that a wine be pleasurable for those who drink it”.
Currently, 50 percent of the bodega’s production is targeted at foreign markets, its main customers being the US, Switzerland, Belgium and the United Kingdom.
These days, its wines and its Bobal grape continue to reap success in international competitions, such as the Decanter Regional Trophy bestowed on ‘Finca Terrerazo 2005’ by the prestigious British magazine in the latest edition of its awards.
