José Mendoza, DO Alicante’s international varietals expert

These three wine categories represent 95 percent of Bodegas Enrique Mendoza’s production, the other 5 percent is made up of three wines: ‘Enrique Mendoza Moscatel de La Marina’, made from Moscatel de Alejandría grown at Alfaz del Pí, ‘Enrique Mendoza Chardonnay’, refreshing and tasty, and ‘Moscatel Dolc Mendoza’, a sweet red made from the Monastrell variety.

Without doubt, one of the keys to the success of the wines made by José Mendoza has been their favourable reception on foreign markets. In fact, half of the production is sold abroad. “Fifteen years ago, because we were a bodega from an emerging region, our reputation as bulk and low quality wine producers weighed heavily on the domestic consumer’s choice. This perception didn’t exist on the international market and our wines were liked. It has helped us a lot”, the oenologist confessed while naming his main customers as Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Puerto Rico, the US, Japan and Australia. “We try not to put all our eggs in the one basket but spread ourselves and up to now this tactic has worked”.

And lastly, as to the future, José Mendoza has no intention of launching any new creation on the market. “I want to do things better, maintain prices, contemplate the wines, help them to get established, to find their place”, he concluded.
