Borsao, a Legendary Label

Grupo Borsao is a winery under DO Campo de Borja, to which it owes its name – Borsao comes from Bursao, the name used 2,400 years ago by the Celtiberians for this town in the province of Saragossa. Despite the name, Borsao is an all-new winery, established on the foundations of the most advanced facilities, best quality in the vineyards and a job well done. These factors combine in wines such as Tres Picos, awarded a number of prizes at international competitions and considered a star buy by many influential international publications thanks to its quality and excellent value.

Though the city of Borja’s history harks back to the early Stone Age, as revealed by the archaeological findings dated to the period, it was in the 4th century bC, under the Celtiberians, when it was given the name of Bursao, recorded in writings and coins from the period.

Successive occupation by the Romans, the Visigoths and Moors left behind a great many architectural remains and, more importantly, a love of the countryside and of the vineyard in particular. No less important was the establishment of techniques that live on as a visible expression of Bursao, the present-day Borja’s cultural wealth.

Our winery, however, was born much later, in 1958, with the establishment of the Borja Cooperative, forerunner of today’s Borsao.

It was not until 2001 that Borsao upgraded from a mere brand name to a fully-fledged company, with the incorporation of Bodegas Borsao S.A., which brought together the Cooperatives of Borja, Pozuelo and Tabuenca, which in turn covered 620 growers. Thus joining their efforts, resources and assets, in addition to the three traditional wineries’ vineyards and know-how, Borsao developed a new concept that was soon touched with international recognition and acclaim.
