Wine as art is a concept that Miguel Mateu, his son in law Arturo Suqué and grandson Javier Suqué have kept very close to their hearts. By keeping up their investment in technology and extending their facilities, they have gradually broadened their range, without betraying their principle of applying production processes that guarantee excellent quality standards.
In addition, Castillo Perelada gradually bought up new vineyards where they planted different grape varieties. Their aim is to innovate in order to satisfy demands for new varietals, whilst constantly improving the quality of their wines. Currently, the Perelada Group holds 150 hectares under cultivation at DO Empordà- Costa Brava split between five estates: La Garriga, Malaveïna, Pont de Molins, Garbet and Espolla.
La Garriga’s 40 hectares are planted with vines over 50 years old from different varieties, both white (Chardonnay and Macabeo) and red (Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Garnacha Tinta and Cariñena). The Malaveïna estate, despite being relatively new, is firmly established on the wine scene thanks to its ‘Finca Malaveïna’, a red made exclusively from the plot’s grapes. These are 22 hectares planted with the red varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Garnacha Tinta and Syrah.
North-west of Perelada lies the ‘Pont de Molins’ estate, 38 hectares of flat, sandy soil with a moderate content in loam, planted both with Chardonnay and the red varieties Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo. This estate produces the renowned ‘Gran Claustro Tinto’, made from a selection of these 15 to 20 year-old vines. ‘Garbet’, in turn, is Castillo de Perelada’s plot with the most marked personality. Located on mountainous land rich in slate, it is cut into terraces down to the sea, just north of Cap de Creus. Its locations and the whims of the Tramontana wind make for an extremely challenging and costly cultivation. The estate holds red varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Garnacha Tinta and Syrah. The estate’s label is the renowned ‘Finca Garbet’.
