‘Bellum Principio 2006’ (91+ points), ‘Heredad Candela Monastrell 2007’ (91 points), ‘Barahonda Barrica 2007’ (90 points), ‘Bellum Providencia 2006’ (90 points), ‘Nabuko 2008’ (90 points), and ‘Bellum El Remate 2005’ (90 points) are the six wines made by the DO Yecla bodega which Jay Miller included in the ‘Spain's Top 100 Wine Values’ list, published in February 2009, and ‘Spain 2009 – An Abundance of Riches’, issued in June 2009.
There are few bodegas that can boast to having no less than six wines at the top of one of the prestigious lists published by Robert Parker, undoubtedly the most influential person on the international wine scene. The merit is even greater, if possible, when the list in question is no other than Spain’s top wine values; wines notable for their quality, but also for their value for money.
Jay Miller, the Spanish wine expert in Parker’s team, has brought together ‘Spain's Top 100 Wine Values’ made up of wines which have been rated with a minimum of 90 points in blind tastings, and whose maximum price on the US market is under $25. The critic not only highlights the first-rate quality of the wines, but also the wide range of appellations which form the selection, a total of 33, in addition to the huge diversity of grape varieties employed. Similarly, in issue 183 of ‘The Wine Advocate’, Miller includes a list of 654 Spanish wines (‘Spain 2009 – An Abundance of Riches’), this time with no price restrictions and emphasises the wealth of the Spanish wine scene in every price range.
Señorío de Barahonda was created in 1925 under the name of Bodegas Antonio Candela, and is one of the most experienced winemaking companies in the Yecla region. During the 90s, the third generation of the Candela family turned the business around by implementing a totally new philosophy and renewing the corporative image, as well as brining in design and innovation to the new products. These days, respect for family tradition, youth, and modernity to the full, are the trademark of the wines made at Señorío de Barahonda under DO Yecla.
