The Eguren Group: a family bodega with international scope

When they were looking for vineyards for Dominio de Eguren, a task that Guillermo Eguren has been and is acknowledged as an expert on, they found an excellent pre-phylloxera vineyard in Valdefinjas, the province of Zamora, which led them to establish bodega ‘Numanthia Termes’, under DO Toro.

Since making its first wine, ‘Numanthia 98’ this venture has been touched by success. Its wines have received the very best reviews from various experts on both sides of the Atlantic. With this wine Marcos Eguren demonstrated that great wines could be made under DO Toro, at a time when this appellation was just beginning to overcome its notoriety for making rough wines with a high alcoholic content.

But not happy with that success, Marcos Eguren decided to aim for something even more difficult: improve Numanthia’s quality, which he achieved against all odds with ‘Termanthia’, made from hundred year-old Tinta de Toro vines, like its fellow wines, but with lower yields, around 700 kg per hectare.

This exclusive wine’s 2004 vintage happens to be the first wine under DO Toro, and one of the first five Spanish wines to be awarded the maximum rating of 100 points by the most influential wine publication in the world, The Wine Advocate, edited and run by Robert Parker, in its latest 2007 edition.

All of this put together confirms that the Eguren Group is a winemaker covering all ranges, from wines for daily consumption to high-quality wines. All of which possess a level of quality that never disappoints the consumer’s expectations, both at home and abroad. In fact, around 50 percent of the group’s bodegas’ production is targeted at foreign markets, its main customers being the US, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Japan and Mexico.
