Bodegas El Nido is the result of the combined dream of an enlighten few who had the strong belief that the soil, climate and the Jumilla Monastrell grape variety could be the foundation of a wine with exceptional personality and quality. They took the calculated risk that this bodega would become a leading benchmark not only for the region but also for the whole Spanish vitivinicultural sector. Today, seven years later, Bodegas El Nido has become one of the best, both at national and international levels.
Bodegas El Nido’s history started in 2001 when the dream of several wine industry professionals became a reality. Bodegas Juan Gil, under DO Jumilla, owned by the prestigious and well-know Gil Vera family, is the major shareholder, followed by Jorge Ordoñez, currently the leading Spanish wine importer to the US, and lastly, Chris Ringland, from Barossa Valley, known as one of the best Australian oenologists and also the indisputable “author” of this venture’s wines.
Each of them, in their own way, has helped Bodegas El Nido wines (‘El Nido’ and ‘Clio’) to become acclaimed by many consumers around the world with great enthusiasm and admiration. In fact, they have done so well, so fast, that sales have to be made through fixed quota orders due, in part, to high demand but also to the limited and exclusive product made at the bodega.
This newly built bodega, designed especially for this venture, brings together all the right ingredient needed to make a great wine. The building was designed with the aim of providing the facilities to pamper the grapes and the winemaking and ageing processes. In other words, functionality takes priority over aesthetics.
The bodega is located in the Paraje de la Aragona, approximately 10 kilometres north of Jumilla, which gives the appellation its name. This small structure is equipped with the technology needed to deal with around 100,000 kilos of grapes, and basically comprises a selection table, several small-capacity vats and large four-tonne vinification vats. The overall set up of the bodega allows total control of the grapes and each and every one of the winemaking and ageing processes.
